AAU
Program
The AAU Basketball leagues
pick up speed at the end of the LINC regular season each spring.
The top players from each age bracket move on to the traveling squads
to complete against players across the state. The AAU program held
at LINC has developed a reputation for excellence with teams in
each age bracket playing well in the State tournaments and often
moving into the national competitions.
Today, both the school year LINC youth basketball program and the
AAU summer basketball programs are located at LINC alongside the
Boys and Girls Club. While it continues to be owned
by the Bloomington Housing Authority, LINC has
become a destination for players and families throughout the county.
Basketball sign ups begin October 24 at Lawrence
Irvin Neighborhood Center.

LINC
(LAWRENCE IRVIN NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER)
BASKETBALL
HISTORY
Lawrence Irvin Neighborhood Center originally opened
as the Sunnyside Center in the 1950s and has served as a playground
and youth activity center for the relatively isolated residential
area near Purina Mills.
The facility was renamed to honor long time friend Lawrence
Irvin, a Bloomington businessman who was very active volunteering
in the community and helping at risk youngsters. The Basketball
program expanded in 1991 as the leaders reached out to students
who were not playing varsity basketball at their schools. IWU
donated the gymnasium floor from Horenberger Gymnasium
when it was replaced by Shirk Center. Volunteer
coaches helped with additional teams and the place became a gathering
point for basketball skills development in the community.
Games
are played Monday – Thursday evenings beginning in November.
High School teams play on Mondays, 7th – 8th grade teams play
Tuesdays and the 5th grade teams play Wednesday evenings at LINC.
6th graders play on Thursday nights. Games start at 5:30 p.m., 6:30
p.m., 7:30 p.m. & 8:30 p.m.
