AUGUST 19, 2005 Summer Camp Clover:
Summer 2005 saw the launch of Camp Clover
for elementary children who participated in the after school reading
program last school year. Camp Clover was coordinated by Rose
Beverly and held week day mornings at WACC the week of
July 11-15. Crafts, games and fun were the highlights of Camp Clover.
The season ended with a two day overnight camp at the Easter
Seal Camp on Lake Bloomington. This camp experience was
provided by the Sunrise Rotary Club. Archery, boating,
swimming and team building activities are especially fun for kids
who haven’t attended camp in the past. The Rotarians
have been incredibly generous by making this camping opportunity
possible, providing counselors, and covering the cost for our youngsters.

NORTHSIDE CHURCH OF CHRIST VOLUNTEERS LED NEIGHBORHOOD VBS
Northside Church of Christ volunteers led a neighborhood
Vacation Bible School
at WACC in August. They began by canvassing the neighborhood surrounding
the Center, inviting children, leaving flyers and letting people
know the VBS was scheduled. Church members led the evening programs
with classes for children of all ages.
The church has invited the parents and children to come back for
a weekly Bible Study beginning September 9th on
Thursday evenings. Other church volunteers are planning to help
with the New Americans Initiative workshops scheduled for this fall.

JUNE 2005 RUTH CIRCLE DONATES LEARNING
TOOLS FOR CHILDREN VISITING THE CENTER
Thank you to the ladies of Ruth Circle at Second Presbyterian
Church who provided some new activity materials for children
to enjoy while their parents are at WACC appointments. The youngest
of these children generally speak only Spanish and these new videos,
reading materials and games are very helpful.
JUNE 1, 2005 AFTER SCHOOL READING PROGRAM TOUCHED CHILDREN
More than 30 elementary school children spent their after school
hours at Western Avenue last Spring (2005). They were bused to the
Center from Sheridan School and enjoyed activities and
a snack during the first hour. While they played, State
Farm volunteers arrived to set up their space for reading
with 2-3 children. From 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. these small groups
poured over books in every corner of the facility. After just 6
weeks, the program showed excellent results. The children recorded
a big improvement in their reading scores in their school classrooms.
Thank you to the many volunteers and to United Way who made this
program possible. After one semester, the program has outgrown the
WACC facility and is being transferred to a nearby church with more
space.

JANUARY 2005 YOUTH IMPACT: GANG INTERVENTION PROGRAM
WACC oversees the Youth Impact Gang Intervention Program
with activities based at LINC. The program funding is provided by
grants from the City of Bloomington, The Bloomington Police
Department and the Normal Police Department. The program
calls for three staff members to work on the streets with at risk
youth in the evenings from Wednesdays through Sundays. The team
is in action most weekend evenings at area high school sporting
events. Their presence and their relationships with students show
the teens that there are adults available to mentor them and care
about them. For at risk teens wanting alternatives to a “gang”
family, the Street Outreach team provides the assurance that someone
does care. Mike Donnelly has many years of experience
with Youth Impact and the other team members are respected leaders
in the community who students know and trust. The program includes
a Sunday afternoon basketball league at LINC.
